Quick and Dirty Monetary Conversions – Europe: Do it in your head and forget about the calculators

Fast, in-your-head money conversion tricks for every European country—no calculator, no stress, just quick “about-right” math for travelers.

Quick and Dirty Monetary Conversions – Europe: Do it in your head and forget about the calculators
Because one wrongly placed decimal point can make that souvenir coffee mug cost you $75. Skip the heavy math and calculators. Do the conversions quick and dirty--in your head.

Travelers have a love-hate relationship with European money. On one hand, you get to collect bills that look like Monopoly cash, and maybe buy cheese with coins that weigh more than your phone. On the other, you’re stuck playing a game of mental Twister every time you see a price tag in zloty, forint, or some other currency that sounds like a sneeze. The euro is everywhere… except where it isn’t, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, you end up tipping a bartender with what turns out to be a bus ticket.

This isn’t a guide for spreadsheet wizards or forex hustlers. You’re not George Soros. You’re just trying to keep from buying a €50 bottle of water at a train station, or accidentally leaving a small fortune in the tip jar. What you need are quick-and-dirty, “that’s close enough” conversion hacks. Is the math exact? Nope. But it’s better than rolling the dice, and definitely faster than pretending you remember your high school algebra.

Find your country from the list below.   Each entry gives you the name of the monetary unit, the current exchange rate and then a quick and dirty conversion from USD and another quick and dirty from the monetary unit back to USD

Then there is a short chart that shows the most common bill denominations and gives you the rough equivalent value in USD.
